How to use Memento

Capturing thoughts

Open Memento and start typing — or, on iPhone, tap the mic and start talking. There are no folders and no tags — you save the thought, and finding it later is the app’s job.

Voice notes (iPhone only for now) are transcribed into text automatically. The transcript becomes the note, and the recording stays attached to it.

If what you saved contains a date or time, Memento offers to set a reminder for it. That offer is the whole trick: you capture once, and the remembering is handled.

Try it

1. Go to the Capture tab and type a thought — or tap the mic and say it, on iPhone.
2. Tap Save. A small sheet confirms it and checks for dates.
3. If a date was found, review it and tap Set Reminder.

Good to know

• A note needs body text — a title alone can’t be saved. Leave the title empty and it fills itself from the first line.
• A new transcription adds to what’s already written, it doesn’t replace it.
• Correct Grammar rewrites the text in place. There is no undo, so read it after.
• Guest accounts have a small daily note limit. It resets once a day, on the UTC clock — for most time zones that is not your local midnight.

Reminders that escalate

Most apps remind you once, at a moment you picked while distracted. For anything with a real deadline, Memento plans several reminders instead. They start quiet and far apart, then arrive closer together and harder to ignore as the day approaches.

How insistent that ladder is comes from your intensity setting: Gentle, Normal, or Persistent. Settings → Notifications.

When the thing is done, tell Memento once — Done on the lock-screen notification, or Mark done in Reminders — and every remaining reminder for it stops.

Try it

1. Save a note with a real deadline in it, like “renew my passport before August 30”.
2. Review the plan Memento proposes — it shows how many reminders and when the first and last arrive.
3. Tap Set Reminder. Open More → Reminders any time to see everything scheduled.

Good to know

• Snooze moves only the next reminder, one day later. The rest of the ladder stays anchored to the deadline. Snoozing something already overdue does nothing.
• A reminder you cancel yourself files under “Needs a look”, next to items that genuinely need attention.
• REMOVED ON DEVICE means this phone no longer holds the scheduled notification — usually cleared in iOS settings or by a restore. The plan is safe; open the item to reschedule.
• Reminders are delivered by one phone at a time. Signing in on a new phone (or reinstalling) moves delivery there.
• For deadlines months away, open the app now and then — reminders are handed to iOS in a rolling 45-day window.
• “Add without asking” schedules quietly at the gentlest ladder, whatever your intensity setting says. Confirming by hand keeps your chosen intensity.
• Turning the Reminders switch off also silences reminders that were already scheduled. Turning it back on restores them.

The Home Screen widget

The widget puts what you have to do today on your Home Screen. It is read-only — it shows things and it opens the app, it has no buttons to finish them.

There are two sizes. The small one shows the next thing due, with a count of everything late or due today. The medium one adds up to three deadlines on the left and your repeating reminders on the right, plus a + that opens Capture.

iOS does not allow an app to place its own widget, so this is something you add once yourself.

Try it

1. Press and hold an empty part of your Home Screen until the icons wiggle.
2. Tap the + in the top corner, then search for Memento.
3. Swipe between the small and medium size and tap Add Widget.
4. Open Memento once afterwards. The widget reads what the app last saved, so it stays empty until the app has run at least once.

Good to know

• “Late” means due on an earlier day, not merely past its due time. Something due at 09:00 still counts as today at 2pm — the same rule the Today tab uses, so the two can never disagree.
• The widget refreshes when you open the app, and when you finish, snooze or cancel something inside it. Marking something done from a lock-screen notification shows up the next time you open the app.
• It rolls the day over on its own at midnight, so yesterday’s unfinished work appears as late without you opening anything.
• If the app has not run for about a day and a half, the widget says “Open Memento to refresh” rather than presenting work that may be out of date.
• It never shows your note text — only reminders and repeating items. Note content is deliberately kept out of the widget.
• It has a dark appearance for dark wallpapers, even though the app itself is light.
• On iOS 18 and later you can also press and hold the Memento icon and turn the icon itself into the widget — and turn it back the same way.

Asking your notes

Instead of scrolling to find a note, ask for it the way you’d ask a person: “What did I say about the roof?” “What’s on this week?”

Answers are built only from your own notes and your scheduled reminders. When the answer isn’t in your notes, Memento says so instead of inventing one — that is the whole reason to trust it.

Try it

1. Open the Ask AI tab.
2. Tap a suggestion, or type your own question.
3. Ask a follow-up as a fresh question — each answer stands on its own.

Good to know

• There is no conversation history. Leaving the tab or restarting the app starts clean.
• A monthly AI allowance covers everything AI-powered: transcription, Correct Grammar, date detection, and Ask AI. If it runs out they pause together until the 1st — typing notes and existing reminders keep working. If voice notes ever seem broken, check Plan & usage first.

Your memories

More → Memories lists every note, newest first. Open one to read, edit, or delete it.

The search bar there matches the words you type, literally. For meaning — “that book someone recommended” — ask the Ask AI tab instead; that is the smart search.

Try it

1. Open More → Memories.
2. Type in the search bar to filter, or tap a note to open it.
3. Use the pencil to edit — Ask AI picks up your changes automatically.

Good to know

• Deleting a note removes it from the app immediately. On the server it is fully purged after 30 days — there is no restore button, so treat delete as final.
• Voice recordings can’t be played back inside the app yet — the transcript is the note. Playback is planned.

Accounts & sync

You can use Memento without an account as a guest. Guest notes work, but they are tied to this one app install — they can’t be recovered on another phone, or after signing out.

Creating an account keeps everything: your guest notes become your account’s notes the moment you confirm your email, and from then on they sync.

Face ID sign-in lets you back into your account without retyping your password. Memento offers it right after a password sign-in — that is the only moment it can be set up.

Try it

1. Open More and tap the profile card.
2. Choose “Sign in or register” and create the account.
3. Tap the link in the confirmation email — your notes are backed up from that moment.

Good to know

• “Reset Guest Session & Sign Out” permanently abandons guest notes — there is no way back into an anonymous session. Create an account first if you want to keep them.
• Until the confirmation email is clicked, you are still a guest with guest limits. The app flips over on its own within a moment of confirming.
• Signing into a different existing account does not move guest notes into it. The app warns you before this happens.

Privacy, export & limits

Your notes are yours. Analytics, if you leave it on, receives counts and taps — never a title, never content. AI providers process your text only to transcribe it or answer your own questions.

Export everything whenever you want: Settings → Privacy & data → Export everything produces one JSON file with every memory and reminder.

Deleting your account is immediate and permanent: every note, every reminder, and every voice recording is removed.

Try it

1. Open Settings from the profile icon.
2. Privacy & data → Export everything, then choose where to send the file.
3. The analytics switch is right above it, if you’d rather share nothing.

Good to know

• The export contains links to your voice recordings, not the audio files themselves.
• During early access every registered account has Premium free — no daily limits, no card, no subscription.
