Privacy Policy

Welcome to Memento. Your privacy is critically important to us. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and the choices you have. By using Memento, you agree to the practices described here.

1. Information We Collect

We collect only what the app needs to work. Each item below says how it reaches us.

• Account information: your email address, collected when you type it into the sign-up or sign-in screen, so we can authenticate you securely. You can also use the app anonymously as a guest, in which case no email is required.
• Your memories (content): the notes, text snippets, and reminders you create, collected as you type or dictate them in the app.
• Voice recordings: if you capture a note by voice, the audio is recorded through your device's microphone (only while you hold or activate the record control) and stored securely so it can be transcribed into text.
• Questions you ask: the questions you type into Ask AI, collected when you send them.
• Device & usage data: anonymous diagnostic data such as crash reports and basic usage events, collected automatically by the app while you use it, and used to keep it stable and improve it. You can switch this off in the app under Settings → Privacy & data.

We do not collect your contacts, photo library, precise location, or advertising identifiers, and we do not track you across other companies' apps or websites.

2. How We Use Your Information

• To provide, maintain, and improve the Memento app and its features.
• To power the "Ask AI" and smart-detection features. With your permission, the relevant parts of your text are sent to our AI provider to generate answers, reminders, and search embeddings — see sections 3 and 4.
• To provide reliable cloud syncing of your memories across your devices.
• To diagnose crashes and understand aggregate, anonymous usage so we can fix problems and prioritize improvements.

3. Third-Party Services

We rely on a small number of trusted providers to run Memento. We share only the data needed for each service to function:

• Supabase — secure cloud storage, authentication, and database hosting for your account and memories.
• OpenAI (OpenAI, L.L.C., United States) — our AI provider. With your permission, and only with your permission, we send it: the text of the notes you save (to detect dates and to build the search index that finds them again), the voice recordings you make (to transcribe them into text), the questions you ask, and excerpts of the notes needed to answer those questions. Nothing is sent for any other purpose. See section 4 for how to grant or withdraw this permission.
• Sentry — crash and error reporting. We scrub note content before sending diagnostics.
• PostHog — anonymous product analytics. We never send your note content, and you can opt out at any time in the app's Privacy settings.

We confirm that each of these third parties provides the same or equal protection of your data as this Privacy Policy does. Each is bound by contract to process your data only on our instructions and only to deliver the service described above, and none of them may use it for their own purposes. In particular, data sent to OpenAI is processed under the OpenAI API terms, which do not permit it to be used to train their models. We do not sell your personal data, and we do not share it with data brokers, advertisers, or any party for advertising or tracking.

4. AI Processing and Your Consent

Sending your notes to OpenAI is optional, and we ask before we do it. The first time you open Memento, the app explains exactly what would be sent and to whom, and asks you to choose. Nothing leaves your device for AI processing unless you say yes.

If you decline, Memento still works: you can write, edit, browse, and search your notes as normal. The features that require AI — voice transcription, automatic date and meeting detection, grammar clean-up, and Ask AI — stay switched off.

You can change your mind at any time, in either direction, under Settings → Privacy & data → Send notes to AI. Switching it off takes effect immediately and stops all further AI processing of your content.

5. Data Security & Storage

We use industry-standard encryption to protect your data in transit and at rest. Your data is stored securely with our backend provider (Supabase). Secret API keys are held only on our servers and are never stored on your device.

6. Data Retention & Deletion

We retain your data for as long as your account is active. You can permanently delete your account and all associated memories at any time from within the app. When you do, your notes and voice recordings are removed and we do not keep shadow copies.

7. Your Rights

• Export: you can export your data at any time from the app's settings.
• Deletion: you can permanently delete your account and all associated memories using the "Delete Account" option.
• AI processing: you can grant or withdraw permission to send your content to OpenAI at any time, under Settings → Privacy & data. See section 4.
• Analytics opt-out: you can turn off anonymous usage analytics in the app's Privacy settings.

8. Children's Privacy

Memento is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them.

9. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we make material changes, we will update the "Last updated" date above and, where appropriate, notify you in the app.
